Moon Bay is another stunning treasure along the Slovenian coast, best experienced from the sea on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP).
Encircled by flysch cliffs, this bay is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters—a sanctuary for an array of marine life. Our quiet SUPs ensure we don't disturb the natural environment, allowing us to closely observe and swim among schools of fish and numerous sea urchins, who will remain undisturbed by our presence.
We will meet in the shade of the trees at the Salinera beach in Strunjan, where we'll distribute equipment and explain the basics to everyone who is new to this sport. Then, we'll push off and take a moment or two by the shellfish beds to adapt to the SUP. We'll greet the Mediterranean shags on the buoys, who are our regular guests, and set off on a journey of a thousand shades of green and blue towards Moon Bay. A thousand shades of green and blue because the sea here likes to change colors; either because of the shifting seabed or because of the clouds drifting lazily across the sky.
We'll take our first break in Moon Bay, where the highest flysch cliff in the Adriatic rises from the sea. We use the stop for a refreshment and a jump into the sea. Since the water here is also the clearest and most pristine, we take the break for snorkeling and exploring the seabed.
The sun is already high, so we head towards Izola and take advantage of the current that carries us to the beach under Belvedere. Here, under the shade of the poplars, we'll treat ourselves to a drink and a grilled dish. We've earned it, having just paddled a 4-km route.
Who would have thought, right?
