Discover the History of the Salt Pans

The Sečovlje Salina Nature Park is a place where nature and history meet. The salt pans were formed along the Dragonja River, where, over the centuries, people developed traditional methods of salt production. This unique ecosystem was shaped by alluvial deposits and natural processes that enabled the establishment of salt fields. The history of salt-making, which dates back centuries, is still alive in every corner of this park. Here, you can learn about the heritage and stories of the people whose significant work has shaped this beautiful place.

Start location: Parecag 293, 6333 Sečovlje • Show on the map

Lera: The first land entrance is located in Seca, where visitors can explore the Lera area. A steep path paved with granite cobblestones leads to Lera: from the main road connecting Lucija with the Secovlje border crossing, a right turn at the top of the hill leads to Seca. At the end of the paved part of the path is an intersection (on the right is the Pick & Place building); from here, the main entrance to the Secovlje Salina Nature Park (KPSS) can already be seen on the bridge over the St. Bartholomew's Canal.

Fontanigge: The second land entrance can be accessed via a gravel road along the Dragonja River (after crossing the Slovenian border control point on the main road, just before the bridge over the Dragonja, turn right). The Fontanigge area also hosts the Musemum of Salt Making.
